“Wallpapers can be very mood-lifting and it’s a fun and creative way to give your room a new look,” explains Keshav Murugesh about this wall treatment. With this look, he and co-stylist Pooja Bhandary, show us how to experiment with the Asian Paints Colour of the Year ‘Curiosity’ by pairing the blue with patterned wallpaper.
“For this chill zone, we choose tropical-inspired wallpaper called Palmyra Bird Song in aqua from the Nilaya by Asian Paints X Good Earth collection,” Pooja continues. “We wanted to give the room a ‘loungey’ effect and turn it into a comfortable space where one can come home after a long day and unwind.”
Read on to find out how to carve out a relaxing corner with their expert designing tips:
Unleash your creative side with patterned wallpaper
The tropical fruits, oversized birds and verdant palms of the wallpaper lend an exotic island getaway vibe to the décor. “For this wall treatment, we wanted to go big with the wallpaper,” says Keshav. “With the wallpaper being this busy you don’t need to fill the space with too many other colours, elements and objects. Simplify the rest of the décor to let the walls take centre stage.”
Balance with a solid colour
Pooja adds, “We didn’t want to use the blue as just a wall skirting so we took it to a height of about 3 feet. It’s still the highlight of the styling yet it blends very well with the wallpaper. The big pattern can overwhelm the décor, but used in this way it lends a fun, relaxed vibe to the space.”
Add a little detailing to your walls
Using a low dado of blue, the duo added a visual and tactile layer with a simple moulding. “The moulding is inspired by the Araish work from Jaipur,” says Keshav, adding “they add these thin lines of POP to the existing wall just to bring in a little detail, texture and character. We’ve used a modern interpretation of a traditional craft to elevate the solid wall colour." With a big room, you can definitely work this look on to all the walls. What Pooja suggests, however, is to let the dado panels with the simple moulding run on all walls and use the patterned wallpaper on only one feature wall. Paint the remaining walls a base colour of the wallpaper, in this case, a light shade of aqua.
Pare down the colour palette
With the walls being the focal point, Keshav suggests using muted colours to balance the look. “This setting works best with light wood, neutral furnishing and simple accessories.”
Add layers through texture, not prints
Pooja insists that the wallpaper should be the only printed element in the room. “Add visual interest through textures, not by layering more prints. We used light wood grain, textured jute, smooth velvets and a hint of tinted glass accessories to complement the pattern.”
Pick a few sleek pieces of furniture
The duo picked a “modern, sleek and smartly designed indoor swing that is perfect for urban apartments with space restrictions” along with a contemporary lounge chair as the only big pieces of furniture in the room. “We added a comfortable rug and plush throw pillows on the floor to complete the relaxed vibe,” Keshav concludes.
