All the tips and ideas you need to ensure that your expensive white goods and appliances stay safe

As our daily livelihood revolves around electronic devices and appliances, we go through different reviews or blogs before purchasing any of these. However, we fail to understand the shortcomings and vulnerability of these devices. The country’s electricity demands have increased and overloaded grids form the root cause of power outages in suburban and rural areas of the country. It has become crucial to keep our appliances safe from power surges, blackouts, and short circuits, improving their longevity along with the safety of our homes.

Below are a few devices that can be installed to negate any electrical shortcomings:

Surge Protectors:

These are devices used to guard appliances against sudden spikes or drops in electricity. To protect the linked devices, it checks the voltage and, in the event of an anomaly, redirects the excess voltage to a ground wire. Depending on your requirements there are two types of surge protectors:

1. Dedicated Surge Protectors:

These can help shield expensive devices or appliances from power surges. These will be useful in areas where more security is needed, like a media/entertainment room with high-end audio and visual equipment.

2. Whole-house Surge Protectors:

It is suggested to install a whole-house surge protector onto your main electrical panel if you are moving into a new home or remodelling your existing one. This will provide every white item and electrical gadget an extra layer of security.

Voltage Stabilisers:

As the name says, this is the most sought-after device used in our Indian household. A stabiliser's responsibility is to continuously monitor the steady voltage that enters from the power source and adjust the voltages if there are any anomalies. Heavy-duty appliances like TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, and more utilise stabilisers.

Power Backup System:

Installing a sine wave inverter in your house also makes your equipment and gadgets more secure. The inverter functions as a stabiliser to reduce voltage spikes that often occur when power is restored during a blackout, allowing for a seamless transition.

Circuit Breakers:

Adding a circuit breaker to your electrical system is an additional low-cost way to safeguard your electronics. The role of this breaker is to trip in case of any surge in the voltage.

Now, we also need to consider external challenges such as climatic conditions, humidity, dust, and other tropical weather-related problems. India goes through various weather cycles throughout the year and monsoons can play major havoc. Let us look at how we can protect our appliances and devices from humidity as well.

Placement of Appliances:

It is a well-known fact that you have to place your appliances away from windows or any area prone to water leakage so that the water does not come in direct contact with them. In low-lying houses and ground-floor flats, it is necessary to raise heavy-duty appliances like refrigerators and washing machines on platforms or movable stands so that during heavy monsoons or water spillage, the water does not reach the base of the device.

Silica Gel or Moisture Absorbers:

The easiest and most common method is the placement of silica gel or camphor in and around the appliances. These have natural characteristics of moisture absorption and effectively remove excess moisture from the air, in turn protecting your devices from rust and mold.

Ventilation:

One of the key factors in moisture build-up is the unavailability of proper ventilation. While installing an appliance make sure that the space around the product facilitates proper air flow. Trapped air can lead to high moisture and increase mold growth.

Dehumidifier:

This would be a great choice to keep the moisture level inside your house at a desired level and prevent moisture build-up inside devices and appliances.

Basic DIY’s and Maintenance:

As much as we may have multiple ways of preventing and protecting our appliances from moisture and humidity, basic hygiene and maintenance from our end is the first step toward the longevity of our products.

1. Cleaning Filters and Coils:

Cleaning air conditioner filters every other month provides better cooling and saves dust from clogging. Similarly, cleaning refrigerator coils once every three months is recommended as it can save them from moisture attraction.

2. Waterproof Covers:

Place these covers on appliances like washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners to prevent them from coming into contact with water and dust. This may not be the most aesthetic way to protect your appliance but is cost-effective.

3. Timely Services:

Get your products/appliances serviced on time to keep them in good working condition. It is crucial to get them serviced once before the monsoon starts so that any type of rust or mold formation can be detected and stopped from spreading.

4. Basic Checks:

Always notice water spills in and around your appliances and dry them properly to avoid any hassles. Unplug large appliances during thunderstorms or lightning strikes to protect them from electrical imbalance and voltage surges.
