By The Riverside blends Scandinavian minimalism with South Indian heritage in a timeless 3-BHK villa
For Swathii Seraan, founder of By The Riverside, designing homes is not just about aesthetics – it’s about narrating the stories of those who live in them. Known for her ability to seamlessly blend cultural heritage with modern sensibilities, Swathii’s work stands as a testament to her philosophy: homes are personal, evolving canvases where the past and present meet in harmony. Her latest project, “Under the Palms”, a 3-BHK villa in Bengaluru, is no different.
The 2,000-square-foot villa is home to a young family of four originally from Kerala. With a penchant for Scandinavian minimalism and a clear aversion to anything overly traditional, the couple sought a design that felt modern yet grounded. Swathii has delicately introduced vibrant hues, handcrafted accents and cultural elements that pay homage to their roots while maintaining the sleek, understated elegance they desire. Swathii worked closely with Asian Paints DecorPro service to bring her vision to life, leveraging their expertise to craft finishes and details that enhance the home’s aesthetic and functionality.
The villa welcomes visitors with a warm wooden console and a painting featuring swaying palm trees by Swathii herself, setting the tone for the rest of the house. The living room, anchored by plush green sofas and a black-and-white inlay coffee table, features thoughtful details like coconut-shell artifacts in black metal frames – a subtle nod to the couple’s roots in Kerala. The dining and kitchen areas, merged to create a patio-like zone overlooking a timber-clad balcony, a raw wood dining table and bench exude rustic charm while Channapatna lights add a playful touch.
This quiet sophistication flows into the bedrooms too – starting with the primary bedroom where sage green wardrobes with brass accents, wood panelling and a clever study nook create a serene yet functional retreat. The guest bedroom, featuring the blush pink “Indus Moon” wallpaper from the Nicobar for Nilaya by Asian Paints collection and a matching headboard, offers a whimsical yet soothing vibe. Meanwhile, the children’s room, with its blackboard-painted walls and vibrant red beds, sparks creativity and joy.
Every corner of “Under the Palms” tells a story, from its carefully chosen furnishings to the carefully curated artifacts that ground the space in its owners’ heritage. Below, Swathii discusses her creative process, the collaboration with Asian Paints DecorPro team and the philosophy behind balancing tradition with contemporary design.
Swathii Seran (SS): Fortunately, I didn’t have to convince them much. They were open to ideas and excited when I introduced influences like the Channapatna lights and the coconut-shell décor. These elements, inspired by South Indian heritage, resonated deeply with them and added personality to their home.
(SS): Our approach was akin to garnishing a dish – just a light sprinkling of traditional elements in a contemporary style. By using them minimally yet thoughtfully, we achieved a balance that felt modern but still grounded in their cultural roots.
(SS): This space is my favorite! The original dining area didn’t feel very purposeful, so we merged it with the spacious kitchen and used a large block of rainforest wood to make the dining table and dining bench. The space freed up became a lounge overlooking a timber-decked balcony, now a serene spot for the family to relax.
(SS): The wardrobes became a way to introduce a colourful element in every room, as the walls were mostly white and there were ample wood elements throughout too. In the master bedroom, the green wardrobe with brass hardware doubles as a statement piece, while the wood panelling and the small desk in the study nook add texture and functionality.
(SS): The palette was curated to balance warmth and modernity. I recommend investing in high-quality finishes to ensure wood looks pristine for years with minimal maintenance. All the wood elements in this home have been used by our clients for a couple of years now and I’m very happy to report that the wood panelling and other features remain maintenance-free. It all depends on the quality of the wood finishes and we used premium finishes from Asian Paints that still look brand new today.
(SS): The idea was to create a space where the kids could express themselves freely. We paired the chalkboard wall with upcycled beds from their previous home, which we painted red, instantly making the room more vibrant and playful.
(SS): Absolutely! There’s a growing interest in designs that feel both luxurious and understated. My tip would be to invest in timeless materials and incorporate cultural elements subtly, so they enhance the space without overpowering it. Under The Palms is a home that will never feel outdated because it’s rooted in the family’s story and designed with materials that age beautifully. From the Channapatna lights to the wood log dining table, every element holds personal significance, making it a space they’ll cherish for years to come.
(SS): We’ve had a decade-long association with Asian Paints now. For this project, we used their concrete finishes, premium wallpapers and PU paints. The DecorPro team was instrumental in helping us select products that aligned with our vision. We like experimenting but also rely on proven materials and Asian Paints offerings fit perfectly. The wallpaper in the guest bedroom, for instance, is from the Nicobar collection for Nilaya by Asian Paints and it adds a calming yet whimsical charm to the space. Fabrics, which we often source from DecorPro, were also part of the design. Their proactive support and high-quality products have consistently enhanced our projects and we look forward to continuing this collaboration in the future.
