In this new season of Asian Paints Where the Heart Is, step inside the vibrant and thoughtfully curated apartment of India’s celebrated wedding specialists
Devika Narain and Joseph Radhik are a power couple in the world of Indian weddings—she’s one of the most sought-after wedding planners and stylists in India and he’s the lensman responsible for the celebrity wedding photographs we collectively obsess over on Instagram. Their careers are rooted in the art of creating beautiful, meaningful experiences for their clients.
Devika is known for her meticulous attention to detail and ability to bring together various cultural and aesthetic elements into the big fat Indian wedding experience, while Joseph captures intimate moments at such events with a keen eye for storytelling. Both have earned a reputation for their impeccable taste in their professional lives, but this is evident in their personal living space as well.
In season eight of Asian Paints Where The Heart Is, we take you on a tour of Devika and Joseph’s maximalist apartment in Mumbai that reflects their shared love for beauty and design. Devika describes her home as her “favourite place in the whole wide world,” and it’s easy to see why. Every corner is brimming with her favourite things—plants, books, art, artisanal décor, heirlooms and treasured mementos— making the apartment feel like a tangible scrapbook of memories they’ve built together.
Yet, amidst these delightful maximalist interiors lies a deep sense of comfort. The velvet sofas in the long, narrow living room are piled high with cushions and practically beckon you to sink in. The upholstery in jewel tones adds richness to the room, while statement rugs bring warmth and texture. Meanwhile, the lush foliage spilling over from their expansive deck embraces the “jungalow” ethos popularised by Justina Blakeney in the US—a style that thrives on forest greens, earthy tones, layering and vibrant patterns. The space is infused with natural light that changes the mood throughout the day. As Joseph notes, “You don’t just see the sunlight here; you get to experience it.”
This beautiful home is not just a testament to the couple’s creativity and design sensibilities—it’s a space that radiates warmth, positivity and a passion for good living. Their ability to blend a variety of design styles with practicality, while keeping it alive with plants, collectibles and evolving décor, makes their home an ever-changing reflection of who they are.
Whether creating versatile spaces or layering textures, there’s plenty of inspiration for compact yet stylish city homes. Here’s how you can adapt some of their ideas to your own space:
Devika’s living room, her favourite in the house, is a masterclass in making a large multifunctional space feel intimate. “When we first moved in here, decorating this rather long room felt like a mammoth task,” she shares. Her solution? Divide the room into functional zones.
● The Library Corner: This section houses her books, collections and curios—a mini gallery with eclectic décor and bohemian
décor.
● The Dining Zone: A dining table, central to their lifestyle, completes this layered yet cohesive layout.
Pro Tip: Use statement rugs, wall treatments like bold wallpapers or textured walls by Asian Paints Royale Play as well as lighting or furniture placement to define different zones within large living rooms. By assigning clear purposes to each section, you can create cohesive, multifunctional spaces.
Devika and Joseph’s home is a testament to how greenery and natural light can transform a living space into a personal sanctuary. Their balcony deck, teeming with trees, flowering plants and a small pond for tiny fish, offers respite from the city’s bustle. Its centrepiece—a daybed—and a blue mirror from Devika’s old family bungalow in Delhi, imbue the space with nostalgia and warmth.
Even without a balcony or outdoor deck, you can bring this sense of vibrancy indoors. Frame your living room with tall potted plants, arrange smaller ones on bookshelves and tables, and add hanging planters to create layers of greenery. Thoughtful placement of plants can instantly energise a home and make it feel more inviting.
Pro Tip: Incorporate plants that suit your home’s light conditions. Devika suggests: Snake plants, rubber plants and peace lilies for low-light spaces, while brighter areas can host ferns philodendrons, or monsteras. East- or west-facing rooms are ideal for fiddle-leaf figs or calatheas, with regular rotation for even sun exposure. Enhance indoor plants with grow lights or LED lamps for areas that lack natural light. Even a small corner can become a green sanctuary with the right elements.
Joseph’s home office doubles as a multimedia room, demonstrating how thoughtful design can maximise a space’s potential. The two-tone walls, painted in complementary shades like Ash Grey and Flipper by Asian Paints, set the tone: darker hues for a cosy home theatre setup and lighter shades for the editing area. “This space has seen every iconic wedding photo I’ve edited over the last few years,” Joseph shares
Pro Tip: Using clever colour combinations and smart lighting can help create zones to fit multiple needs without giving up on style.
Devika’s office also takes cues from similar monochrome palettes. “Because my work is filled with so much colour, I wanted this space to feel grounding,” she explains. The black walls—get the look with the shade Raven Song by Asian Paints—are balanced by a bold wallpaper, also by Asian Paints, that reminds her of Chennai silk sarees. Small artworks collected from Portugal and Florence, along with a playful pink throw over a leather chaise, add touches of warmth and whimsy.
Pro Tip: Devika says, “If you commit to one bold choice—a statement rug, a piece of art or even a wall colour that you love—it can hold a whole room together to create a successful, beautiful space.”
Devika’s approach to decorating and interior styling is rooted in the idea of turning every surface into a story. On an Instagram post, she notes “I don't think one can ever have enough tables! They’re the perfect places to cluster and display interesting things and great to move around when you have company!” Coffee tables, consoles, bookshelves and even desks become galleries of curated objects. This technique of clustering bohemian décor and artisanal finds not only adds personality to the space but also allows for a dynamic, ever-evolving décor style.
Pro Tip: Create clusters with varying heights and textures. Pair a sleek vase with a stack of books and a small sculpture. This juxtaposition creates visual interest and tells a story about your style and experiences.
Rugs are more than just functional floor coverings in Devika’s home—they’re mood enhancers. She layers multiple statement rugs in her living room, office, and even on her deck, using colour and texture to transform each space. Her playful use of colour and patterns adds warmth to even the most neutral spaces like a home office.
Pro Tip: Experiment with layering a bold, patterned statement rug over a more neutral one for a cozy, inviting vibe. Use rugs to delineate spaces in an open-plan area, such as separating the dining area from the living room.
Bookshelves in Devika’s home are not just functional—they are autobiographical. “You can tell so much about a person simply by glancing at their bookshelves,” she muses. Over the years, she’s mastered the art of styling them and she’s even decoded her bookshelf styling formula:
Pro Tip: Refresh your bookshelves periodically. Rearrange objects, swap out collections, and add seasonal décor to keep the display feeling fresh and reflective of your current interests.
Devika’s mantra for her home is refreshingly real: “Homes aren't meant to be perfect. They’re a work in progress, making space for new things, letting go of what’s broken, seemingly put together but with a cushion or vase kept the wrong way.” This philosophy is reflected in every corner of her house, from the gallery of artwork that includes a medley of styles—artisanal décor like papier-mâché animal heads, graphic illustrations and traditional Indian art—to her rotating collections on tabletops and bookshelves. Her home feels vibrant, lived-in alive and always Insta-worthy.
Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to mix styles, textures, and eras in your décor. Let your space grow and evolve with you, adding layers of meaning and memory over time.
For Devika and Joseph, home is more than a physical space, it’s a living, breathing canvas of their lives. As Joseph puts it, “Initially, I thought having so many things might feel overwhelming, but it’s the opposite. Everything here feels intentional, and it all belongs.”
