In this edition of Asian Paints Where The Heart Is the couple invites us into their 150-year-old Portuguese home in the heart of Saligao, Goa. Lovingly restored by the couple, it brims with character, colour and a touch of the unexpected
Set in the sleepy village of Saligao, surrounded by lush green fields, Casa Zen is quite literally like a burst of sunshine with its white-and-yellow exterior. Lovingly restored by Arshad Warsi and Maria Goretti, this 150-year-old Portuguese style home exudes happiness at every corner. Part of the eighth season of Asian Paints Where the Heart Is, the villa is not just a weekend getaway for the couple but a reflection of their personalities—playful, warm and utterly unique.
The journey of restoring Casa Zen was personal and entirely hands-on. In 2021, they took on the challenge of bringing the old structure back to life, preserving its heritage while making it their own. “Between Warsi and me, we’ve built three homes together from scratch, with many, many arguments in between,” Maria says with a smile, offering a glimpse into the passion and occasional chaos that fuelled the process.
Every decision, from hunting down hand-painted, Portuguese style Azulejo tiles in Bicholim to commissioning stained glass windows by an artist in Mumbai, was made with care and intent, resulting in a space that feels as vibrant and grounded as the couple themselves.
Every corner of the house is filled with treasures—family heirlooms, antiques and keepsakes that speak of their life together. “This house is like a big, fat album of our life,” Arshad says. “It doesn’t end—you just keep adding to it.” For those who want to infuse bold colours, playful patterns, embrace eclectic décor and personalise their space, Maria’s approach to interior styling is full of inspiration:
The villa is an eclectic mix of colours, textures and playful design—from dainty floral murals that adorn bedroom doors painted in bold colours to quirky details like fish sculptures that peek both inside and out of its walls. The dining room is a special delight and it’s dramatic flair is particularly easy to replicate in compact city apartments. A lush, jungle-themed wallpaper from Asian Paints sets the tone and all the seating is painted in forest greens and earthy tones of blue and purple using Asian Paints Woodtech Emporio Pu Palette. “I think sometimes less is more, but sometimes more is less,” Maria says, summing up her fearless approach to mixing patterns and finishes.
Pro Tip: If it sounds too daunting, create a mood board first. The trick? Use a consistent colour combination or theme—like forest greens, coastal blues or urban greys—and then layer patterns, prints and textures in small doses.
Casa Zen also offers lessons in designing multifunctional spaces. For Arshad, the holiday home is a sanctuary that couldn’t be further removed from city life. “The high ceilings are a blessing,” he says, pointing out how the airy rooms are a stark contrast to Mumbai apartments. His favourite spot is his art studio, tucked into the home like a secret retreat, while Maria’s sunlit walkway serves as both a passageway and a gallery for her DIY pieces.
The sheer size of vacation homes can often feel overwhelming to decorate but the Warsis have made Casa Zen feel intimate by creating cosy corners throughout. From loveseats in the verandah to benches in bedrooms and armchairs in corridors, there’s a spot for every mood—whether it’s for morning coffee, a leisurely chat or even cosy reading nooks. Each seating area feels thoughtfully placed, making the home both functional and welcoming.
Pro Tip: Add bright, printed soft cushions and throws in jewel tones to make breakout spaces inviting, no matter the season.
Old bungalows like Casa Zen come with treasures waiting to be rediscovered. The couple lovingly restored original shell windows and doors and scoured antique markets and their own family homes for big, statement furniture. Maria also channelled her creativity into upcycling furniture and adding thoughtful details, like the two-tone walls and painted mouldings in the bedrooms.
In the walkway, a bright blue cabinet is splashed with gold accents (an effect that can be achieved with metallic paints by Asian Paints) is a standout. In the primary bedroom, a monochrome palette spells serenity and wooden balusters are accented with black and white paint to match the walls that feature a large mural of dandelions.
Use Asian Paints Woodtech Emporio PU to restore wooden furniture to create timeless classics (using a clear finish) or experiment with faux finishes and colours from the PU Palette for a fresh, bespoke look.
Pro Tip: Don’t shy away from experimenting with leftover paints or finishes to create striking DIY pieces. For instance, another storage console in the primary bedroom features a chic abstract black-and-white design over its blonde wood body.
There’s no doubt the house is a sensory delight, full of “Easter eggs” thoughtfully placed by Maria and Arshad. There’s a little signboard by the pool defines the noun “family,” as well as other artisanal décor scattered across the villa like terracotta sentinel angels and hand-painted animal figurines. A sign at the entrance reads “Peace to all who enter here” welcomes guests as they walk through indigo-blue textured walls, a finish that can be replicated with Asian Paints Royale Play Textures.
Pro Tip: Turn restoration into a community project. From sourcing planters from the local potters’ market to commissioning murals by Goan artists like Neha Sudhakar and Smriti Sabbanwar, Maria worked with local artisans to craft the soul of Casa Zen with bohemian décor. She says seeking out experts within your community can result in one-of-a-kind interior styling. She highly recommends Turi Azulejos and Pottery in Bicholim for “azulejos”, the beautiful glazed ceramic tiles synonymous with Portuguese style colonial homes.
In vacation homes, the outdoors are as important as the indoors. At Casa Zen, the garden is alive with tropical plants, terracotta planters and comfortable seating for lazy afternoons by the pool.
Pro Tip: Add layers to your outdoor space with different heights—tall palms, mid-level ferns and flowering pots. A well-designed outdoor bar can be a bold centrepiece for entertaining.
Casa Zen’s high ceilings are a revelation, flooding rooms with light and air. For Arshad, this is the ultimate luxury. But no matter the size of your home, use large windows, open layouts, airy walkways and paint your ceilings white to maximise light in order to make your space home feel expansive. At Casa Zen, lofty painted ceilings allow natural light to pour in, while sheer curtains filter the sunlight beautifully, adding softness to the rooms. Antique chandeliers and sconces create a warm, inviting glow in the evenings.
