The actor’s home, shared with her sister, is a vibrant space filled with stories, memories and her signature charm
Taapsee Pannu’s Mumbai duplex is as vibrant and expressive as the actor herself. With standout performances in films like Haseen Dillruba, Dunki and Pink, Tapsee is best known for consistently bringing authenticity and depth to her characters. In Season 8 of Asian Paints Where the Heart Is, we take you on a tour of the thoughtfully designed and highly personalised apartment that she shares with her sister, Shagun Pannu. Influenced by her international travels and Punjabi heritage, the house is a reflection of her warmth and the generous hospitality she grew up with, making it as inviting as it is unique.
The house is sprawled across two distinct floors, each with its own theme but tied together by the thoughtfulness in its design. The lower level is expansive and bright, drawing on vintage European styling with a charming, eclectic twist. White walls and light-coloured furniture create a soft, cheerful aesthetic, enhanced by details like ruffled curtains, plush upholstery and floral patterns that lend a cozy, lived-in vibe. The airy living room, bathed in natural light also features vintage-inspired décor like a large clock on a brick-textured wall. Tapsee likes to describe it as her “Little Europe in India”.
Upstairs, the vibe changes completely. Here, Taapsee has created what she fondly calls “Pannu Pind,” a floor steeped in her Punjabi roots. The design leans on textured walls including exposed brick and carved wood panelling as well as earthy tones that dominate, creating a space that feels rustic and warm. Handcrafted elements, like phulkari upholstery and commissioned Warli art, lend a deeply personal touch, while larger details, such as carved wooden panels that frame the floor-to-ceiling windows and mirror work, add richness to the design.
Each corner of Taapsee’s home tells a story – whether it’s the gallery wall full of mementos from her travels abroad, the artisanal accents like the mini jharokhas from Jaipur that line the staircase or even the functional elements with a creative twist, like the turntable shoe cabinet in her dressing room. This thoughtfulness extends to every design choice, making her home a source of inspiration for anyone looking to create a space that reflects their own journey.
Here’s how you can bring a little bit of that same charm into your home.
Drawing inspiration from Taapsee Pannu's thoughtfully designed Mumbai duplex, here are five tips to help you create highly personalised and eclectic spaces:
The entrance to your home sets the tone for the entire space. Taapsee Pannu, with her distinct taste, proves that even the doorway can tell a story. Her duplex features two unique entryways, each brimming with character and personality.
For the European-themed floor, she opted for a bold blue door with intricate iron grills, complemented by wall planters and a striking blue bench. Wicker woven pendant lights add warmth and texture, while a playful doormat greets guests with the message, “You look nice today.” On the “Pannu Pind” level, an antique carved wooden door contrasts beautifully against a white wall adorned with a “Tree of Life” carving, illuminated by soft lighting. There are other thoughtful details like terracotta bird wall hangings and a doormat that cheekily reads, “Pretend this is a haveli.”
Taapsee says, “We are so particular about how our house looks on the inside, but I think context is set from the moment someone comes to the door.” Whether you choose bold colours for the walls or the doors, planters or a sweet little seat for putting on shoes, the entryway should reflect your style and make a warm first impression.
A bold door colour can make a striking statement. Shades like deep navy, matte black or vibrant jewel tones can add character. For wooden doors, Asian Paints offers products such as WoodTech Emporio PU to achieve a smooth, durable finish.
Pro Tip: Enhance your entryway’s ambience with layered lighting, such as wall sconces or pendant lights, to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Walls and ceilings offer expansive canvases for expression. Shagun Pannu notes, “Just putting in furniture is the easiest part; how you do up your walls and your ceilings is something that you need to figure out first and then everything else falls into place.” In their home, treatments range from exposed brick and mirror work and mosaic tiles to commissioned Warli art and wood panelling. Consider diverse textures and finishes to add depth and character to your space.
One the standout feature of the home is the gallery wall that resembles a colour swatch book, which Taapsee refers to as her “Asian Paints Wall”. This creative display incorporates broad stripes of various hues – you can get the look with Pinks and Blues like Tinge of Mauve (8107) and Mauritius (7458) as well as Creams like Love Song (L144), Sugared Nut (L126).
Pro Tip: Incorporating open shelving into your wall design not only adds visual interest but also provides functional space to display personal artifacts and décor.
Taapsee’s home seamlessly merges European vintage charm with Indian traditional elements. Don’t be afraid to incorporate décor pieces, textiles and art from different cultures alongside local crafts to create a rich, eclectic aesthetic that resonates with your personal experiences. Here are a few ways to achieve this eclectic interior style:
Pro Tip: To create a harmonious blend of global and local elements, start with a neutral base. And if it still seems to daunting to blend diverse cultural elements or themes, try maintaining a cohesive colour palette to unify them. For instance, collect and curate artisanal décor in earthy tones or objects and art in jewel tones as a set before putting them on display.
In urban homes where space is at a premium, incorporating multifunctional furniture can significantly enhance both functionality and aesthetics. Taapsee’s duplex exemplifies this approach, with custom-made pieces that serve multiple purposes. We especially like the dressing room that features a turntable shoe cabinet that cleverly takes up half the space an ordinary cupboard would.
Pro Tip: When selecting multifunctional furniture, prioritise pieces that offer hidden storage solutions like sofa beds, storage ottomans, extendable dining tables and wall mounted desks or bar cabinets.
The balconies on both levels of Tapsee’s duplex are lush with plants – 137, to be exact – and compliment the overall narrative of the floor their own. They serve as cosy reading nooks where the sisters unwind. The lower-level balcony features a swing with a vintage white-coloured seat surrounded by lush greenery, tying into the European charm of the floor. The upper-level balcony takes on a more traditional look, with a charpoy and a circular swing with an embroidered canopy.
To infuse your city apartment’s balcony or windows with similar vitality, consider selecting diverse plant varieties – a mix of flowering plants, succulents and climbers to add visual interest and texture. Using vertical space with hanging planters or wall-mounted pots can maximise greenery without encroaching on limited floor areas. If space permits, add a swing or a small dining set and don’t forget to decorate with colourful cushions, eclectic planters and handcrafted artifacts.
Pro Tip: Enhance privacy and create a serene atmosphere by installing bamboo screens or trellises with climbing plants.
