Get personal with a mid-century-modern Mumbai rental home

This charming mid-century modern themed apartment is home to a tax collector, her writer husband and their ginger cat

The best kinds of homes are the ones filled with things that have their own back stories. As I look at the charming objects that surround tax collector, Daribha Lyndem and comedian and writer Adhiraj Singh’s home, I am reminded of this, over and over again.

Once we have spent some time sharing taxmen jokes, I take a tour of this two bedroom rental apartment that this couple calls home. The two have spent enough time battling dank, airless rental PGs and apartments, to know that this 18th floor apartment that they found was the proverbial real estate pot of gold. With ample sunlight streaming in from the east, the space is bright and airy - a luxury in Mumbai.

Lyndem, whose Instagram bio owns up to her ‘hoarder’ status, wanted to do up their apartment in a style that’s close to her heart. “I love mid-century modern design and the art deco aesthetic so I made sure our furniture fit that theme,” she says. A chartreuse couch anchors the décor in the living room, flanked by an upholstered mid-century modern chair and centre table that Lyndem bought from Mumbai’s Chor Bazaar. A turquoise wingback chair with a three-legged stool piled high with books serves as an enviable reading nook and  Lyndem added a small rug to the wall to give the corner a fun boho-chic twist.

Armed with sufficient inspiration from online décor blogs that she loves to follow, Lyndem also personalised a cool DIY-gallery wall. Over the course of the last few months she put together each of the prints including the one with her a quote from her favourite Charles Dickens novel.

Two pieces of furniture - a neglected shoe shelf and an old cabinet that came with the apartment were re-purposed and adapted to fit the mid-century modern theme. She added a white carved mirror on top of the shoe shelf and used the cabinet to store the couple’s vast collection of books. A bunch of quirky, personal objects atop both are total eye candy and a prompted a fun session of “where’s this one from?”

A wild-eyed young Frankenstein vinyl doll on the cabinet is one of the first things that gets my attention. “We got that one because on our first date, we bonded over how much we loved that film and Mel Brooks. So this was a reminder of that,” shares the couple.

Lyndem loves plants and has carefully placed a collection of indoor plants around the living room. Their cat Purcy, who ignored us for the entire duration of our visit, has ensured that the chairs in the living room bear a clear stamp of his claw sharpening skills.

When asked what makes this space feel like home, Lyndem answers, “This apartment has been home since we got married last February and we love it. It’s a place where we can unwind after a tiring day in this very hectic city. I made sure that everything in the house evoked a sense of comfort and calm, where we could just relax over a cup of tea and catch up with each.”

The living room has been put together with furniture sourced from Chor Bazaar in Mumbai and pieces the couple has collected over time.
Nature is ever present throughout the home, from flowers in glass vases to larger indoor plants in corners.

The couple’s personal mementos line the top of their book cabinet in the living room.
The mementos pictured here include a vintage-styled radio from Croma, a Gene Wilder figurine and a wooden shark brought back from a trip to Andaman Islands.
Reminiscent of the IKEA EKENÄSET armchair, this piece fits right into the mid-century modern styling.

The two cabinets next to each other were both pieces left behind by the landlord that have been repurposed and given new life in this home.
