Asian Paints launches Chromacosm which is the world’s largest repository of paint colours—and gets Indian-American architect and artist Suchi Reddy to interpret it in 3D
Asian Paints, a global brand in the paints and colour technology space, has conceptualised and created the largest paint library in the world this year. The launch of Chromacosm by Asian Paints marks an impressive initiative by the brand. The world’s largest architectural colour system, Chromacosm is a unified repository of paint colours accessible to architects and designers.
The brand leveraged a combination of meticulous technical expertise and visual precision, honed over decades, to create this comprehensive library. As Asian Paints’ MD and CEO Amit Syngle says, “The creation of Chromacosm is a reflection of our commitment to creativity and excellence in the field of colour technology. The repository offers a level of precision and variety that has never been seen before in the industry. [It] will revolutionise the way architects and designers approach colour selection.”
What makes Chromacosm interesting is the sheer volume; it features 5,300 unique shades of varying depth and hues. Beyond that, it offers a nuanced collection of shades in a colour family, from the lightest to the darkest, in intensity and saturation. Essentially, architects and designers will get to compare and contrast all the different shades at a glance. A significant addition to a designer’s toolkit, Chromacosm will allow them to explore colour options at a granular level. The idea is to make decision-making seamless and ensure that designers can see it all before making that final choice. As Syngle reaffirms, Chromacosm provides professionals “an unparalleled range of options to bring their creative visions to life, and offer myriad colour choices for the discerning customer”.
Asian Paints collaborated with Suchi Reddy, New York-based architect, artist and founder of studio Reddymade, to mark the launch of this library of colours. She created an installation, an artistic interpretation of Chromacosm in 3D for the launch event that took place in Mumbai. For this contemplation on colour in 3D, she found inspiration in ancient tantric paintings. Reddy explored the limitless colour cosmos with a series of rods in a spectrum of shades, from black to vivid hues. “The installation references the coming together of all colours, which in paint becomes black and in light becomes white,” she elaborates.
Giving dimension to the idea of colour with Chromacosm the Installation, Reddy created a veritable forest of these vertical reeds. An interactive creation, the viewer can walk through this forest, “experiencing 2,200 shades of colour that emerge and recede to black. It is an experiential journey through the cosmos of colour.”
As milestone moments go, this is a big one for Asian Paints. After all, it isn’t often that a brand launches the world’s largest paint library (and gets an artistic ode in 3D).
Suchi Reddy’s Chromacosm the Installation was unveiled on 17 December 2024 and will be showcased at the Architecture and Design Film Festival at NCPA, Mumbai from 9–12 January 2025
