If you’ve ever walked into a ho-hum looking room and wondered ‘How can this space be transformed?’ then this is the right story for you. In this series called Designers Hack, expert interior designers tell us how they renovated a space, so you can use the information to work magic in your own spaces. In this edition, Arun Shekar Gowda and Mohammed Afnan i.e., team Humming Tree, based in Kozhikode, Kerala, explain how they redesigned a completely non-descript bedroom and turned into a dramatic, chic version of itself. The home, located in Kozhikode, has a tropical surrounding, and the owners gave their home nature-inspired décor but left a room untouched. It was dark, but spacious and accompanied by a beautiful patio. They handed over the renovation project to the team at Humming Tree. Judge for yourself from the pictures—the magic, comfort, light and personality of the space. According to the architects, these are the essential factors that made a difference in this design:
1. Choosing Deep Hues And Colours.
Using deep colours like kale green is an easy way to give your room cocoon-like depth.
2. Playing With Textures.
Avoid applying paint the usual plain way. Use simple brush strokes to add character to the walls. Continue this effect and colour on the ceilings too, this way the walls look in sync and don’t take up all the attention.
3. Creating Contrast With A Striking Wallpaper.
Introducing contrast in the room easily elevates the look of the setting. This look can be achieved in your bedroom design with a dramatic wallpaper.. The safest choice is to go with a black-and-white or monotone pattern that attracts the eyes. It will easily balance brush-stroked walls in terms of texture as well as colour.
4. Use Materials That Are Versatile.
You’ll never go wrong by choosing material like rattan and cane for furniture. Not only are natural materials trendy, but they’ll never really go out of fashion. These types of materials are very adaptive and suits a vast number of looks and colours. And being organic by nature, it exudes a sense of comfort and warmth in a room.
5. Work Around A Theme.
Think of a theme that you feel most comfortable with. Here, for example, the room depicts a nature-inspired tropical theme. Choose colours and materials accordingly, so everything looks perfectly in place together.
6. Layer tThe Room By Varying Heights.
If you fancy the idea of a tall nightstand, elevate it higher than your bed. It simply scales up proportions in the room and adds volume to the space. Choose furniture pieces that have different heights and scales to add visual interest to the room.
7. Art Is Key.
When it comes to picking art, the duo’s advice is to go with vintage pieces. Pick pieces that complement the colour and look of the room. It pulls the room together and adds interest to the setting.
8. Add A Plant.
Bring in a dramatic indoor plant. A little green never fails to bring life into a space.
9. Open The Space Up.
There are two ways to do this. Make the window bigger and allow lots of light in then use window treatments to control the light throughout the day, as per your preference. Second option: Use mirrors in your décor. Mirrors help make the space look bigger and helps open up spaces quite easily.
