Sonal Sancheti and Rahul Gore, principals and partners at Opolis, create a studio centred around biophilia
Award-winning, multidisciplinary design practice Opolis has been upping the ante since it started in 2001. Helmed by principal designers and partners Sonal Sancheti and Rahul Gore, the duo splits their time between their Mumbai and Pune studios. While the former reflects the metropolis’ fast-paced energy, the new one in Pune lets nature take the limelight with its glass facades opening to views of the greens outside. From water lilies and a large canopy of trees, this workspace creates a conscious confluence of biophilic elements, human interaction and creative synergies in a calming setting. We speak to the designers about their Pune studio and how this weekly change in pace and scenery recharges them mentally.
Sonal Sancheti (SS) and Rahul Gore (RG): Our main studio is in Mumbai where we've been practising for the last 24 years, and recently we have expanded to Pune where we have a beautiful, new studio. The space is in fact a four-room apartment, made by combining two smaller homes. We broke down many walls to make it suitable for our workspace. The way this office opens out to the greens is really calming, and sets up a lovely energy for us and the team working indoors.
SS: Most of the weekend homes that we have designed are based on the concept of ‘borrowed landscape’ where the indoor spaces look out to the greenery or nature outside and I think we are very fortunate to have found a studio space like this that lets us do that.
RG: One of the best parts of my morning is coming to this space, walking through the lush landscape with trees around and taking the stairs where water lilies greet you. It is an energising moment for me, and is a good start to my day.
SS: For me, it is all about walking through the lovely green path, listening to birds chirping that allows me to take a pause and slow down before I enter the studio and the whirlwind takes over my day.
RG: In our Mumbai studio, Sonal and I were sharing the same cabin and it was inevitable that we would end up squabbling. So what we’ve done here is we’ve managed to get our own cabins along with a meeting room which is great.
SS: I think this happened at the right time. We are in the second phase of our journey so having ‘his’ and ‘her’ cabins work really well for our practice.
SS: Having studios in cities like Mumbai and Pune is letting us enjoy the best of worlds. Typically, the first half of the week we are in Pune, enjoying the lovely, quiet space; and the second half of the week we are in the buzzing Mumbai city which has a very different energy than Pune.
RG: One of the best things about being in this space in Pune is the weather. We rarely use air-conditioning and it is a treat to keep your windows open and take in the natural greenery surrounding us.
SS: We didn’t find what we were looking for in Mumbai, and we felt Pune is the right place to expand in. This creative space which is almost like being in a forest is perfect for us. We don’t feel the need to play music, we love to hear birds chirping outside, and the kind of biodiversity we see here is amazing.
SS: One of the most special things about this studio is that the original apartment belongs to my sister, it was her old home that we’ve rented out and modified to create our office. But it was also my first project after I passed out of CEPT as I worked on designing a lovely table in her garden, along with the compound wall and the lotus pond. I think what really makes a practice is the people, and we've been really fortunate to have a fantastic team all along. Everybody really treats this office as an extension of their home and we love that.
